The Veterans Charity has created 2,977 poppies, one in memory of every person killed in the terrorist attacks of 11th September 2001. Most of the poppies are red, while 70 have been painted blue to honour the law-enforcement personnel who lost their lives. A single purple poppy remembers Sirius, the Port Authority Police Department dog who was also killed that day.
Each poppy has been handcrafted from scallop shells donated by Newlynโs fishing fleet. The bamboo canes were provided by Riviera Produce, water-based paint by Dulux and screws by B&Q.
Creating the installation has been a true community effort. Around 6,000 shells were washed, drilled and painted by students from Redruth School, veterans from local Armed Forces Breakfast Clubs, visitors to The Veterans Halt at Gwinear Road, and supporters of The Veterans Charity.
On ๐๐ฎ๐ง๐๐๐ฒ ๐๐ญ๐ก ๐๐๐ฉ๐ญ๐๐ฆ๐๐๐ซ, members of the charity and Hayle Town Council will joined representatives from supporting organisations to assemble the finished poppies along King George V Memorial Walk. They will be in situ for one month, so please come along and visit this beautiful installation.

A commemorative wreath made from scallop shells has also been created as part of the project.
Following its launch at RNAS Culdrose, the wreath visited locations across Cornwall and London connected with Rickโs life and story. British Airways then carried it to New York, where UK veterans based in the United States and members of the Port Authority Police Department supported its journey to Ground Zero.
This installation is a collective act of remembrance created in Cornwall and dedicated to all those whose lives were taken on 9/11.
